5 friends, 2 dogs (named Merlin and Arthur *lol*) and I went to Wales from 6th - 13th July to hunt down some Merlin filming locations. As we know, Merlin has often filmed in the caves at Clearwell Caves (in the Forest of Dean) over the past few seasons, starting with the miners working under Camelot in episode 201 The Curse of Cornelius Sigan. Porth yr Ogof is a significant cave in the Brecon Beacons near the village of Ystradfellte. The Welsh name translates as 'the mouth (or gateway) of the cave', apt because the main entrance is the largest cave entrance in Wales, at over 17 metres wide and almost 5 metres tall.

Mr Leary and I had fun on another Merlin Locations Tour (TM) yesterday, and braved the depths of Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean.

I can now definitely confirm that this was used as a filming location in episodes 201 The Curse of Cornelius Sigan and 204 Lancelot and Guinevere. In ep 201, Clearwell Caves stood in for the caves below Camelot ( Read more... )

I'm making a bit of an assumption here… I know they filmed part of season two in Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean - and the first ep of the season, The Curse of Cornelius Sigan, uses caves that look somewhat like the photos I've seen of Clearwell Caves - so I'm going to risk putting two and two together and perhaps only making three.
